‘Dog Days of Summer’ salon
August 4 - August 27
Art and merchandise celebrating our love for pets and animals.

In Greek mythology, Orion is the giant hunter whom Zeus placed among the stars in the constellation that now bears his name. Of course, every hunter has a trusty canine companion, so the ancient Romans named the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major for Sirius, Orion's dog.

In July and August in the Northern Hemisphere, the star Sirius flashes in the pre-dawn sky before the sun appears. The Romans referred to the sweltering period when the two stars converged as the "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star," believing the two stars combining in the heavens led to the heat wave on Earth. By the 1500s, the English began to call the same point on the calendar the "dog days."

In honor of Sirius and Orion's human-animal bond and the month's sizzling temperatures, our August Summer Salon celebrates our love for our pets – from dogs and cats to lizards and birds – as well as the animal kingdom in general. From paintings, photography, and illustrations to clothing and accessories (for humans and dogs!), this month's shoppable salon of works features 29 talented local artists and makers from around our city.

“As an artist and curator, I'm passionate about supporting other artists and makers. One of the best ways to do that is to present their works to the community through art shows, shoppable salons, and special events. By funding my efforts to curate these shows, you will magnify each show's impact, amplify the voices of artists and makers, and become part of a greater movement to connect people through art. Become a Patron and support my work!” — Ellen Sturm Niz

‘Life Aquatic’ Salon
July 1 - 27
Art celebrating life at or on the water.

The July Salon at Atelier Canal centers on the theme of 'Life Aquatic' to celebrate spending time at or in the water, whether it be the Hudson River, a remote lake, the Atlantic Ocean, or a mystical waterfall. New York City living is, in fact, "island life," though not in the way HGTV portrays it.

Nevertheless, we are surrounded by bodies of water and can watch the sun set over the East River from Brooklyn Bridge Park, kayak in the Gowanus Canal, or go surfing at Rockaway Beach. Or, if the thought of braving public transit or bumper to bumper traffic to get to the water's edge is just too much to bear, New Yorkers are just fine popping open a fire hydrant to cool down before sunbathing on the rooftop.

This month's shoppable salon of works features 28 talented local artists and makers from around our city. From paintings and photography to ceramics and sculpture, and from handmade soy candles to artisan jewelry, these works are perfect for evoking a cool escape into the watery depths during the hottest days of summer.

‘Garden Party’ Salon
June 2 - June 25

The June Salon at Atelier Canal centers on the theme of 'Garden Party' to celebrate the visceral summer urge we suddenly feel to gather outside and soak in the warm air. For New Yorkers, a garden party could mean meeting up with friends in a park for a (secretly) boozy picnic, romantically heading to the rooftop with a partner to watch the sunset, or reveling in the luck of knowing (or being!) someone with a backyard where you can socialize in "nature." Or, maybe it's just throwing open the windows of your apartment, filling the space with plants, and lighting a floral-scented candle to decompress.

This month's shoppable salon of works features 28 talented local artists and makers from our city. From paintings and photography to fiber art and sculpture, and from outdoor pillows and butterfly lanterns to terrazzo serving ware and handmade soy candles, these works are perfect for hosting a garden party in an outdoor space — or evoking the joy of alfresco socializing at an indoor soirée.

Many, many thanks to Anne-Laure Py for generously sharing this space to showcase local Artists and Makers, and much gratitude to everyone at Craftspring for their assistance. I would also like to thank my family, friends, and patrons for their amazing support in bringing this labor of love to life.

We hope to see you at this month’s special events: Song Cycle Gowanus on Friday, June 17 (5:30 - 7 p.m.) and the live Poetry Reading on Thursday, June 23 (5:30 - 7 p.m.).
